Big Dawg, you ask about soil type and how to find that out. The best website I can lead you to is http://websoilsurvey.nrcs.usda.gov/app/HomePage.htm
. Once you get there, click on the big green circle and it'll lead you to another page. From there, navigate either on the US map, or you can search by county, address, etc. Once you find your property, outline it with an "area of interest" polygon. From there use the many tools to navigate and find out as much information as you can. It'll give you soil types, soil properties, historic vegetation, etc. If you need anymore info, let me know.
I use this website to determine best places for me to conduct brush management, where a pond would work, and even possible building sites. I like viewing the historic vegetation and comparing to what I actually have out there. Not saying this site is perfect, but it is a good resource to use and determine as much information about your property as you can. You can also print decent maps. Just thought I'd let you know about it.
